Pande is a Blind International Swimmer of India. Her full name is Kanchanmal Pande, who originally hails from Nagpur which is in Maharashtra. She has competed with many sighted players at all levels and won medals in that tournaments despite being blind. Most interesting thing is that she has always been gold Medal winner in all National and State Level Championship.

The statistics has showed that she had won 120 medals including International, National, State Level Tournaments. Out of these 120 Medals, 114 were gold that is a shocking figure. She also has won bronze medal in 200 Metres Medley in the World Para- Championship, Mexico 2017. Apart from medals of tournaments, she also has given several awards from governments, Institutions, Academy etc.

Life

She is born in 1990 Dec. Her father is Dyaneshwar Pande and her mother is Hira Pande. Her husband name is Vinod Deshmukh. She originally hails from Nagpur which is a district of Maharashtra. As per many resources, it has been found that she was doing swimming from the age of 10, the age at which children used to play, she was doing swimming.

It is not easy for a child to swim as it requires stamina and strength, but her obstacle is not strength and stamina it is her blindness. Her determination to swimming made her strong, courageous and she fearlessly fought with it and completely eradicated her blindness from her way. She then participated in various tournaments though some with sighted players.

In her early phase of life as a swimmer, she had won several awards from many district, state levels. She hails from small town where she had many challenges like sponsorship, nutritious food, professional training, professional nutritionists etc. But still she had smiled and do regular exercise.

Career

Being a blind child is the biggest obstacle for her life but she over come this obstacle through rigorous exercise, training and motivation. She also said in an interview that at much higher levels we have several pressures and hurdles like political level, gold for team, expectation from people and many other thoughts. Fulfilling these is not an easy but having focus on your game, practice and goal is the secret to overcome these pressures and hurdles.

Kanchanmal Pande is a professional blind female swimmer. She has won several medals from many tournaments. When she was in Malaysia Para, where India did not won any medals and all eyes were on her. She faced many pressures from many. She had to compete with world class player and also win it. At that event she given all her efforts and clinched the gold. After match she was not even capable to stand.

During a national level match she was not allowed to participate as it was for swimmers aged 12 years and above and also she was blind. Authorities prohibited her as she was 11 years and blind. She then made an undertaking and competed in the tournaments. In that match she competed and completed the race in 1 hr and 14 minutes which completely shocked the authorities. These were the time, where she was at its peak.

After winning National Championship, she told that practice was very tough and painful after pregnancy. Comeback of Kanchanmal Pande

She is married to Vinod Desmukh . She is a Class I officer in Reserve Bank of India. She got pregnant and left swimming for almost 2 years.

It was very hard for her to left swimming also she missed Tokyo Summer Olympics 2021. After lockdown she started training for herself and return in National Swimming Championship which was held in Udaipur, Rajasthan. In that championship she won 03 Gold in S-11 events (100 mtr freestyle, 100 mtrs Backstroke, and 100 mtrs Breaststroke).

In her journey, her family has always been supportive to her. Apart from family and friends, her guide and supporter Prashant Karmakar who is also an Arjuna Awardee also played an important role in her career. He has always supported her even in her struggle phase and helped her in her practice.

During Berlin Para Swimming Championship, she was returning in tram and was travelling without ticket after she was not given enough money by the PCI. She reportedly fined but she did not have money and borrow money from fellow swimmer. This incident took attention of many including Ministers and well known personality like Abhinav Bindra and many sports person.

Currently, she is planning to participate in a couple of tournaments which is scheduled to be held in Australia, Germany, USA etc. She aims for World Championship and Paris Olympics 2024. It is obvious that she is aiming for Olympics but also she is working to promote blind swimmers. She has attachment with some institutions which imparts education, training and promotion to blind swimmer and players.
